This resource contains the first set in a series of 4 sets of resources designed to consolidate some of the work undertaken in the White Rose Maths Scheme small steps Year 6 programme. This resource is intended for use in week 8 of the Summer Term. It will pupils to use the knowledge and skills they have gained by using them in investigations involving problem-solving and reasoning.
The resource focuses on the following areas of the Year 6 Maths National Curriculum Objectives:
Use knowledge of the order of operations to carry out calculations involving the four operations.
Solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts deciding which operations and methods to use and why.
Solve number problems and practical problems that involve all elements of place value.
Calculate and interpret the mean as an average.
Solve problems involving the calculation and conversion of units of measure, using decimal notation to three decimal places.
Calculate and interpret the mean as an average.
Enumerate all possibilities of combinations of two variables
Investigations
Coronation Square - pupils investigate the number of people living in a number of houses.
Chessboard Squares - pupils investigate and calculate the number of squares on a chessboard.
Oscar’s Book - pupils investigate the number of pages in a book.
Cinema Outing - pupils investigate whether four friends are able to get together for a trip to the cinema.
The Long Jump Competition - pupils investigate the length of pupils’ long jumps on Sports Day.
Ice Creams All Round - pupils investigate the combinations of scoops of ice cream on a cone out of 3 or more choices.

This PowerPoint slideshow contains 172 slides that create a magical journey through China. The presentation includes a wide variety of inspiring images of Chinese culture – the landscape, the people, the customs, the arts, animals and flowers from Inner Mongolia to the Great Wall of China, from the Panda to sushi. It is accompanied by Chinese music and plays automatically. It also contains a suggestions for use sheet.
The show lasts for 15 minutes and is ideal for the Chinese New Year.
Suggestions for Use
1. Use for an assembly – let the PowerPoint run, the powerful images speak for themselves. Questions to ask:

2. Use as a stimulus for research
